4 Things to Know About the Landscaping Industry
Jul 17, 2023

Landscaping transforms the relatively bland outdoor areas of residential and commercial properties into more useful and attractive areas. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics categorizes landscaping among the administrative, support, and waste management services sectors. Here is a closer look at four key things to know about the landscaping industry.

1. Residential Properties Drive the Landscaping Industry

The vast majority of landscaping companies provide services for single-family residential properties. According to Lawn and Landscape magazine, single-family homes account for 65 percent of all work for landscapers. By comparison, about a fourth of landscapers say they provide services for commercial properties. That work might include tree removal services and stump grinding. If roots are endangering part of the property or the tree itself is in bad health or infested by pests, such as the emerald ash borer or termites, homeowners will often turn to these services.

2. Landscape Maintenance Is Very Profitable

Once a landscape is installed and looking its best, it requires maintenance services to stay in good shape. More than 40 percent of landscapers, according to Lawn and Landscape magazine, said they provide clients with landscape maintenance services, which might include
tree removal services. Trees need constant trimming care to keep yards and homes safe from potential accidents.

3. Most Landscapers Do Not Design and Build

The Lawn and Landscape magazine survey suggests there are relatively few landscaping companies that provide services to design and build landscapes. About a fifth of landscaping contractors said they design and build landscapes in addition to maintaining them. A landscape architect will be harder for potential clients to find than someone to maintain the landscape after it is installed.

4. Landscaping Adds Value to Properties

Those who are considering hiring a landscaping service should be happy to know that landscaping adds value to properties. From hardscapes to tree removal, there are many different ways you can boost your home's value through landscaping. Enjoy the improved curb appeal and usefulness of a landscaped property!
